Green Iguana Livestock Techniques

Iguanas come from tropical climates and need a warm place. A good temperature for Iguana development is 26-29 degrees C, basking 32-35 degrees C. In maintaining Iguanas, the most important things to consider are cages and food.

Cage Preparation. Iguana cultivator from Yogyakarta, Ila, uses cages made of iron or wire. Sizes vary from 2.5 – 3.5 meters (length) x 1.5 – 2 meters (width) x 2 meters (height).

In the cage as much as possible, conditioned according to its natural habitat so that it is not easily stressed and breeds quickly. Provide a drinking place in the cage, twigs for climbing or a small tree, a cardboard base with sand in one corner.

Furthermore, the most important thing is that the roof of the cage is given a shade covering half of the cage for shade. Try to keep the cage in direct sunlight to maintain the metabolism and bone growth of the Iguana, thus preventing the Iguana from getting sick easily. The temperature of the cage is adjusted to its natural habitat so it is better to have a thermometer installed in the cage to monitor the temperature. Condition of the cage away from the crowd.

Maintenance. Iguanas are plant-eating animals, that's what causes them to be tame reptiles even though they seem fierce. It is better to provide food consisting of vegetables and fruit in a fresh condition, which is given in a variety of ways.

Feeding must be done in a balanced manner, especially the proportion of nutrients and the type of intake. Iguana foods that are often used include: vegetables (kale, bean sprouts, mustard greens, lettuce, cabbage, and carrots) and fruit (sapodilla, banana, papaya, melon, apple, tomato), and others.

Food is given 2-3 times a day for young Iguanas and 2-3 times a week for adult Iguanas. The portion of food should be sufficient so that no food is wasted. The portion of this food will increase every time. Therefore, the amount of food should be adjusted to the size or weight of the iguana so that there is no food residue which is the main factor that makes the cage dirty, damp, and smelly. Sometimes to increase food sources of animal protein, Iguanas are given crickets, worms, or mice.

Nails are part of the Iguana's body that grows fast. Nails function to grip the surface of the ground or wood when the Iguana is walking. However, nails that are too long will also interfere with the iguana's walking. Therefore, trim the Iguana's nails regularly, about once every 2 weeks. Use special scissors to trim the Iguana's nails for a neat cut.

Reproduction. Iguanas are animals that reproduce by laying eggs. In order to be hatched, the eggs must be fertilized/incubated by the male. This happens through a natural mating process. In order for the mating process to occur effectively, enter the male parent and female parent in one cage. A good ratio for mating, ie 1 male and 2-3 females.

What makes the difference between males and females is that the male combs are longer, the body is bigger, the skin color is lighter, the head is bigger, and there is an Adam's apple. While the female iguana has a shorter comb, smaller body, lighter skin color, and a small head.

Usually the reproduction process occurs once a year in August, then 1-2 months later the broodstock will lay eggs, and hatch at the latest around January. Once laying eggs each parent is able to lay about 25-40 eggs and which will hatch live around 80%.

Each time they lay eggs, they will produce 1-2 quality chicks with the characteristics of pastel green/bright green, lips like wearing blue lipstick, the selling price is 3 times more expensive than usual. In its life cycle, female brooders mate only once a year and males can mate 2-3 times a year.

The food factor is also very supportive of the formation of fertile eggs (can hatch). Before mating, provide sufficient quality food for both male and female Iguanas. Because Iguanas are animals that are easily stressed, such as no appetite, fierce, skin color turns dark.

The solution is to pay attention to the food. Besides that, we can move it to a quieter place. And give drink and supplements sprinkled on his food. For example, Vita-gel mineral and energy enhancer with a dose of 1-3 cm is given 1-2 times / day only when there is no appetite.
