Betta fish are carnivores, of course feeding algae is useless. Betta fish are also known to be aggressive so they will also eat other small fish. It's a good idea to keep small species of fish or other aggressive fish separate. Some people think that betta fish are picky eaters, when in fact it's the quantity of food that matters.

The best types of food for betta fish are live shrimp or worms, mosquito larvae, frozen live feed or pellets. Live food is certainly preferred although it is not always easy to buy. But keep in mind, if you want to breed betta fish properly, give live food. Frozen food is a great alternative to live food and will save you more time maintaining the aquarium.

If you can only afford the occasional live food, break it into small pieces and store it in the freezer for the next few weeks. Freeze-dried food is one of the betta's favorite foods and one of the easiest food choices. Many shops sell dried worms and such, you only need to spread them into the aquarium in small quantities per day.

Even though your betta loves freeze-dried food, and your betta looks healthy with just one type of food, it's a good idea to change your diet every now and then. If you want to give pellet food, give it a special one for betta fish. Feed twice a day. The pellets have the right amount of protein and vitamins to maintain the color of your betta. On the other hand, make sure the pellets don't accumulate at the bottom of the tank or aquarium as this can contaminate the water.

If you don't know how much to feed your betta, there's a simple way to find out. Watch how much your betta eats for two minutes, from which you can determine the amount of food for your fish. If you give food in excess, it will cause leftover food and can pollute the environment in the aquarium.

Betta fish can gain weight. Some of the betta fish will continue to eat after two minutes and their stomachs will get bigger and bigger. If the betta fish you keep experiences this, it's a good idea for your pet betta to go on a diet.

For how often or the frequency of feeding betta fish depends on the size of the fish and the type of food provided. Generally, adult fish should not be fed more than twice a day or even once is sufficient. However, for younger fish need two meals per day. Sometimes it is advisable to leave them deprived of food, this is to help their digestive system rest. But make sure you don't do this continuously, your betta fish might get unwanted diseases.
